What Can the Devil Steal? Part 2

image of strong tower

  1. Is there any truth to the idea or belief that the Devil stole anything from you?
  2. If he did take or steal anything from you, when did it happen?
    1. Before you became a Child of God (i.e., before you were Born Again)?
    2. After you became a Child of God (i.e., after you were Born Again)?
      1. How was he able to steal from you?
      2. What did he steal from you?
  3. If the Devil was “permitted” (by God) to steal anything from you (as in the case with Job {Job 1:6-12}), why would you want it back?

Who is the real thief?

NOTE: Please understand everything from this point on is written specifically to the children of God; the born-again believers; sons of God; those in the body of Christ…

1 John 3:1-10 (BWE) See how much the Father has loved us! We are called God’s children. It is true, we are God’s children. People in this world did not know him and so they do not know us.  My dear brothers, we are God’s children now. No one knows yet what we shall be like.  But we know that when Jesus comes, we will be like him. We will see him as he really is.  Everyone who has this hope about Christ makes his life holy. He makes his life holy and clean, just as Christ is holy.

Everyone who does wrong things is breaking God’s law. Doing wrong things is breaking the law.  You know that Christ came to take away the wrong things people have done. He is the one who has done no wrong.  Everyone who stays with him does not do wrong things. Everyone who does wrong things has never seen him and has never known him.  My children, do not let anyone fool you. Anyone who does what is good, is good just as Christ is good.  Anyone who does what is wrong belongs to the devil. The devil has done what is wrong from the beginning. That is why God’s Son came. He came to stop what the devil doesNo one who is God’s child does wrong things, because God’s life is in him. And he cannot keep on doing wrong things, because he is God’s child.  This is how people can know who are God’s children and who are the devil’s children.  Everyone who does not do right is not God’s child. And anyone who does not love his brother is not God’s child. [please read I Corinthians 2:6-16 and 3:18-20].

God’s word cannot/should not be taken literally (actually, exactly or really) or word for word in every case. We need to know the difference between literal and figurative (a word or phrase that changes course or strays from being directly expressed) language.

One good example:

1 Thessalonians 5:2 (RKJNT) For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord shall come as a thief in the night.

BTW, the Bible in Worldwide English (BWE) translates “…the Lord will come just like a person who comes to steal in the night“. Ask yourself, is this verse to be interpreted literally or figuratively?

First let’s go back to John 10:10 (see “What Can the Devil Steal? Part 1“), the word thief is a translation of G2812 κλέπτης kleptes (klep’-tace) which comes from the primary verb G2813 κλέπτω klepto (klep’-to) “to filch”:

  • Webster’s Dictionary definition and word origin for “filch”: a middle-English word meaning “to steal (something that is small or that has little value)”
  • Nelson’s Bible Dictionary definition: “Any person who takes something which he does not own…”

Just for clarity let’s see how kleptes is used throughout scripture and most of all to see who it is referring to:

  • Matthew 6:19-20 RKJNT Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal:  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal: [please read Matthew 6:19-24]

Do you believe this thief is the Devil or humans?
We will deal with the thought that the Devil is responsible for every evil act that is done in part 3.

  • Luke 12:33 RKJNT Sell what you have, and give alms; provide yourselves purses which do not grow old, a treasure in heaven that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. [please read Luke 12:22-34]

Is Jesus referring to the Devil or humans in this passage?

We are protected by God

Psalms 27:1 (OEB) The LORD is my light and my saviour; whom then should I fear? The LORD protects my life; whom then should I dread?
[read Psalms 27:1-11; all of 91 and Proverbs 18:10]

He protected the Jews; the children of Israel!

Genesis 12:1-3 (BBE) Now the Lord said to Abram, Go out from your country and from your family and from your father’s house, into the land to which I will be your guide:  And I will make of you a great nation, blessing you and making your name great; and you will be a blessing:  To them who are good to you will I give blessing, and on him who does you wrong will I put my curse: and you will become a name of blessing to all the families of the earth.

He also protects the church; the children of God

1 Peter 1:5 (ERV) God’s power protects you through your faith, and it keeps you safe until your salvation comes. That salvation is ready to be given to you at the end of time.

1 John 5:18 (BWE) We know that any child of God does not do wrong things. The Son of God keeps him safe and the devil cannot touch him.

[read 1 Peter 1:3-12; John 10:25-30; John 17:6-15; 2 Thessalonians 3:3-5; 2 Timothy 4:16-18; 1 Peter 5:1-8; 1 John 4:4-6 & 5:18-21]

We have God-given power!

  • Matthew 10:1 (BBE) And he got together his twelve disciples and gave them the power of driving out unclean spirits, and of making well all sorts of disease and pain. [please read Matthew 10:1-15; Mark 3:13-19; 6:7-13 and Luke 6:12-16; 9:1-6]
  • Luke 10:17-19 (RKJNT)  And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject to us through your name.  And he said to them, I beheld Satan fall like lightning from heaven.  Behold, I give to you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

[please read Luke 10:1-24] Do you believe this power was given only to the apostles/disciples? I guess we cannot overlook the use of the word “enemy”; do you believe this is referencing “Satan”/”the Devil”?

  • Mickelson defines “enemy” as: G2190 ἐχθρός echthros (ech-thros’); 4. (usually as a noun) an enemy (especially Satan)
  • The Contemporary English Version (CEV) uses “your enemy Satan
  • The An Understandable Version (AUV) adds [i.e., Satan. See verse 18]
  • the Easy-to-Read (ERV) states: “I saw Satan falling like lightning from the sky. He is the enemy…”
  • Mark 16:16-17 RKJNT He who believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he who does not believe shall be condemned.  And these signs shall follow those who believe; In my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

[please read Mark 16:9-20] Does this apply to ALL born again believers?

  • Acts 1:8 (RKJNT) But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you: and you shall be witnesses to me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.

[please read Acts 1:1-11]

  • Not convinced yet? [please read: Luke 24:44-49; Romans 15:14-21; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; 2 Corinthians 10:4 [read 2 Corinthians 10:1-11]; Ephesians 1:15-23; 3:14-21; 6:10-20; Philippians 4:10-20; 2 Timothy 1:7 [read 2 Timothy 1:3-18; 2 Peter 1:3-11]

That power was demonstrated

  • Mark 6:12-13 (RKJNT) And they went out, and preached that men should repent.  And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them. [read Mark 6:7-13]
  • Acts 8:6-7 (RKJNT) And the people with one accord gave heed to the things of which Philip spoke, hearing and seeing the miraculous signs which he didFor unclean spirits, crying out with loud voices, came out of many who were possessed: and many taken with paralysis, and those who were lame, were healed.

[please read Acts 8:4-25;1 Corinthians 4:14-21]

Did you know?

(a few verses for thought)

Jesus rebuked a fever – Luke 4:38-39 (KJV) And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

Who you should invite to dinner or to your party –  Luke 14:12-14 (RKJNT) Then he said to his host, When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your kinsmen, or your rich neighbours; lest they invite you in return, and you are repaid.  But when you have a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:  And you shall be blessed; for they cannot repay you: but you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.

image of three enemiesMost of us have been taught that we have one enemy, as a result our focus is primaryly on the Devil, but in reality we have two other enemies that can catch us off guard and they are our own flesh and the world or world system. Realize that the Devil and the world {world system} work through our flesh.

This I say, Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are in conflict with one another: so that you cannot do the things that you wish.

But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. God is Spirit: and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
